What are you planning to do with all that upcoming vacation time? It’s almost 2016, so if you’ve got vacation days, it’s time to use them. Additionally, your employer is likely to offer long weekends and mid-week time off because of the upcoming holidays. If you’re a gamer, it’s highly unlikely you’ll be bored during your vacation. You’ve got the following titles to keep you warm and cozy all week long.
The Best Fantasy Games
If you’re into MMORPGs, TheSecretWorld.com is breathing new life into a genre that’s grown stale with similar offerings. Instead of your standard fare, The Secret World is a “modern-day mmo…” The game is played in a modern-day setting, but the weaponry and powers of the characters are anything but normal. There’s no classes or levels, but the game has enough content and dramatic storyline to keep you immersed long after your vacation has ended.
For consoles, Fable Legends is a long-awaited title and the beta is currently available for exploring. There’s no exact date on when the full game will release, but the creators have promised it will be out sometime in 2015. The game promises to showcase Albion in an entirely new light, so if you’ve played previous Fable titles expect something unique and different this time around.
Another different fantasy title is Firewatch. PC Advisor called Firewatch, a “first-person adventure game with a scary twist. You play as a man called Henry, a man who has retreated from his messy life to work as a fire lookout…The game looks to be decision based, with different choices affecting the environment around you, and possibly even the end result.” Looks mysterious and alluring, but isn’t expected to come out until the very end of the year (and, alas the end of the holiday vacation season).
The Best Sports Games
Need for Speed 2015 was released recently (won’t release on PC until the beginning of 2016). The critics have given the racing title mixed reviews, but if you’re a fan of the genre you’ll want to check it out. Forza Motorsport 6 received more positive reviews, so if you’re choosing between the two racing titles Forza is probably the better choice.
Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash offers a creative spin on tennis, and will keep you from withering away on the sofa. It makes you get up and move. It’s ideal for the gamer who wants to play virtual sports, but loves a lot of creativity in how they’re played. For more traditional sports titles, check out NBA 2K16 or FIFA 16, which both topped “best of” sports games lists this year.
The Best War/Action Games
There’s so many action-packed games to choose from, it’s unlikely you’ll grow bored this holiday season. There’s the recently launched Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, which has received some decent reviews (especially in regards to graphics). There’s also Halo 5 Guardians, a first-person shooter game with good critical reception.
Call of Duty: Black Ops III continues the title’s sci-fi derivative. Again, this is another title that was critically well-received. Good critical reception is to be expected from Call of Duty titles, as they’ve never been known to disappoint. Fall Out 4 recently hit shelves to massive critical praise, and it offers so much content it’s likely you can cover the entire Commonwealth in the time you have off work.
Finally, there’s the upcoming games, which include Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, a unique first-person shooter that’s highly anticipated. There’s also Star Wars: Battlefront and Rise of the Tomb Raider. There’s so many options for this holiday season, you’ll be keeping yourself busy into 2016.
